CROSS_HEAT is a project to heat homes and businesses in the region around the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium in a cleaner way. Currently, a lot of fossil fuels are still being used there. This is bad for the climate and causes high CO₂ emissions. In this region, very little heat comes from sustainable sources such as residual heat or geothermal energy.
CROSS_HEAT aims to build a large heating system that crosses national borders. This will enable better use of residual heat and geothermal energy, for example from old mines or factories. The project also helps to resolve difficult differences in regulations between countries, making cooperation easier.
The best sustainable heating method will be identified and then tested. Citizens and businesses will be invited to participate in the discussion and will receive information during meetings and courses. Energy companies and investors will also be involved in the collaboration to ensure that the system can actually be built.
The aim is for homes and businesses to become less dependent on gas or oil. This will result in cleaner air, cheaper energy and lower CO₂ emissions. In the long term, more areas in the region will be able to use this smart and sustainable way of heating.
