Director ITEM
Martin Unfried (1966) has been working in the Netherlands since 1997. He was initially affiliated with the European Institute for Public Administration (EIPA). Since 2015, he has been a senior researcher at ITEM, and in 2025 he was appointed director of ITEM. Martin is project leader of ITEM’s annual border effects report and is responsible, among other things, for developing border effects guidelines for the Dutch government and conducting research into territorial impact assessment. He also specializes in issues relating to the cross-border labor market and job placement and was involved in setting up border information points and organizing cross-border job placement services. He is currently working on studies for the European Commission and the OECD, among others.
