ITEM - Studium Generale Lecture series

On the occasion of our 10th anniversary, in cooperation with Studium Generale, we organise a lecture series in which we look back at 10 years of developments in cross-border cooperation and mobility. We also look ahead to the next 10 years of ‘European integration at the border’. The need for and the way in which European integration should take place at the border is being thought of differently. For instance, how have (administrative) cooperation, labour mobility, security and healthcare developed across borders, and what can we expect from the future? How can we further promote European Integration at the border?

This lecture series consists of 8 lectures. All lectures are in Dutch except of the first one on 18 September:

How to ‘govern’ together across borders?
Prof. Christine Neuhold, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Professor of EU Democratic Governance, UM

When looking at how administrations and other actors such as NGOs work together across national borders we can observe “processes of governance in action”. This lecture will zoom in on how this process plays out in the practical (political) process.

Euregionaal Expertise Centrum voor de Chirurgische Zorg van het Kind: noodzaak, uitdagingen en oplossingen
Prof. dr. Wim van Gemert, Divisiehoofd kinderchirurgie Maastricht UMC+ en Uniklinik RWTH Aachen

Het voortbestaan van de chirurgische zorg voor het kind wordt bedreigd door de geografische ligging in een grensgebied en een veranderend politiek klimaat. De enige oplossing is een intensieve grensoverschrijdende samenwerking tussen partners in een Euregionaal expertisecentrum.

Over de sociale cohesie en de veerkracht in Nederland en haar grensregio’s
Prof. dr. Hans Schmeets, bijzonder hoogleraar sociale statistiek, UM en tevens als senior onderzoeker verbonden aan het CBS

Met gegevens over meer dan 90 duizend personen worden trends over de periode 2012-2023 gepresenteerd en komen (grens) regionale verschillen aan bod. Specifieke aandacht krijgt de invloed van de Covid-19 pandemie op het vertrouwen en de participatie, met de onderliggende vraag hoe veerkrachtig de Nederlandse samenleving is.
